Lab course in optoelectronics

Information about the lab course

The course in optoelectronics is in the format of an "Opto Device Challenge". Instead of ready-made production protocols, groups of three students independently develop the design and manufacturing of an optoelectronic component under specific conditions (e.g. using a particular emitter material).

In the first phase of the project, the students initially conduct a literature search, and independently develop a concept. In two concept meetings, the concepts and production parameters developed are presented to the supervisory staff and discussed with them.

In the second phase of the project, there are two production days in the cleanroom of the Kiel Nanolaboratory, during which the concepts can be put into practice by the students themselves. On another day spent in the optics laboratory of the chair of integrated systems and photonics, the components are then electronically and optically characterised. The students gain theoretical and practical knowledge in the production and characterisation of optoelectronic devices.

In the third phase of the project, the students interpret and evaluate their measurement results. Since the project is designed as a challenge, the individual groups present their concepts and results to a jury in a 15-20 minute presentation. At the end, the jury announces a winning group based on specific criteria (e.g. efficiency, level of innovation, presentation of results).

The prerequisite for this course is successful completion of the Bachelor’s lab course in "Micro, nano and opto system technology" and/or the "Optical systems" lecture and/or the "Photonic components” lecture. The dates of the course groups (each with either 2 or 3 students) will be determined in consultation with the supervisory staff.
