Integrated Systems and Photonics

Introductory project

Information about the project

The introductory project is compulsory for all first-semester students of the degree programmes in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (ETIT) as well as Electrical Engineering, Information Technology and Business Management. It is offered in the first week of the winter semester (15.10 - 19.10.2018) as a block course, when the later semesters are busy with their exam week. The regular weekly lectures begin the following week.

In the project week, you will build and test a metal detector in groups of five. While doing so, you will:

  • gain practical experience in electrical circuits

  • programme a micro-controller (Arduino)

  • conduct electrical measurements in the laboratory

  • get to know the professors, scientific staff and the grounds of the Faculty of Engineering (TF-Ost)

  • experience engineering project work in a team

  • get to know your fellow students

  • compare your sensor with others in a sensor challenge, and

  • have fun!

Throughout the week, you will hear keynote speeches from various employees of the Faculty of Engineering, to find out what you need to know in order to build the metal detector, and learn more about the research activities in electrical engineering and information technology. As is common in industry, you will be divided into project teams. We will allocate students to groups of five, and introduce the members to each other at the beginning of the project. You will remain in your group for the entire first semester of "Fundamentals of electrical engineering I".

Participation in the introductory project does not require prior registration for the "Introductory project (Etit-313)" via the OLAT online learning platform. Attendance on Monday is sufficient. However, you are still welcome to register for the OLAT course now if you want to.

Click here to register for the introductory project.

Note: Please use your stu-account (create a stu-account ) to register in OLAT. You can also use the university WiFi with this account (WiFi: eduroam setup).

This introductory project is timed so that there is no clash with the other introductory events (Refresher Course in school mathematiks for physicists and engineers, Refresher Course for the lecture "Introduction to physics for enineering students" and the First semester introduction offered by the Departmental Student Organisation for Engineering).
